Scales that Olivier Messiaen devised and used in his work, they are based on the 12 tone tempered system and can only be transposed a limited number of times. The whole tone scale (which Messiaen categorized as the First Mode) has only 2 traspositions, the distance is of a semi tone.
Debussy and the Russian Composers of the 19th century used the whole tone scale to obtain exotic sounds and weaken the tonal centre of the music.
I have began exploring the intervallic relations of these scales, forming 2 or 3 note chords on the guitar. I am creating short mood pieces using the octatonic, whole tone and Messiaen's Third Mode. It is interesting to add convetional triads as well, it intensifies the lyricism of the pieces.
